The purpose of the fundraising
Mirai (Future) Project
We kindly ask your contribution towards Hard Reef’s revitalization project.
Hard Reef is not just a place for locals, but for people from mainland Japan and from all over the world.
Okinawan surf legend Toyokazu Miyagi, aka “Kazubo”, first opened Hard Reef in 1990.
Ever since Hard Reef opened its doors, surfers, divers, locals, and foreigners, regardless of age or nationality gathered there.
In 2024, 34 years after opening, Kazubo left the Hard Reef behind.
After the heart-breaking news, one by one friends gathered at the Hard Reef to share their thoughts and feelings of Kazubo.
The paddle-out ceremony to sending Kazubo off was held in June in calm waters that seemed to express his personality. Hundreds of people gathered from all over the world to show their love and gratitude.
Hard reef is filled with the memories of each person that has entered; people that love Okinawan sea and their friend Kazubo. Kazubo in return loved his friends and led the Okinawa surfing scene for decades. In the 34 years that Hard Reef has served as the meeting place, its age has begun to show.
At this rate, the day will soon come when it difficult to recognize the place Kazubo created.
Therefore, we launch this crowdfunding project to enhance the future of Hard Reef with the help from everyone.
Donations will fund the renovation. All work will be completed by us, the surfers.
Names of all those that contribute will be listed on a memorial board constructed inside the Hard Reef.
We are implementing this project believing that it is Kazubo’s wish that the Hard Reef remain a place where everyone gathers and propels Okinawa surf culture to the future.

Kazubo’s birthday has come and gone without him.
He suddenly disappeared without saying goodbye.
Kazubo’s hospitality embodied the “ichariba chodei” spirit. Ichariba chodei means that once we meet, we are brothers. Ichariba chodie is Hard Reef’s motto and next year it will celebrate its 35th year anniversary.
Because of Kazubo’s warm character, many generations of people from all over the world attended the June memorial ceremony held on the Sunabe coast.

Not only as a surfer, but as the president of the Okinawa Surfing Association, he created an environment to foster the development of the next generation of surfers.
Kazubo’s children, Kazuma, Arisa, Daiki, and Ryuta, have pledged to protect Hard Reef and we have been thinking of different courses of action over the last 6 months.
We launch the “Hard Reef Future Project Fundraising” with the desire and goal to connect and foster the next generation.
The project will include new air conditioning, kitchen makeover, and bathroom renovations with an estimated completion of summer 2025.
Today we pledge, on Toyokazu Miyagi’s birthday, we begin this endeavor, the “Hard Reef Future Project Fundraising”.

Okinawan surf legend Toyokazu Miyagi, aka “Kazubo”, first opened Hard Reef in 1990.
Hard Reef is the to go place all those who love the ocean, surfers, divers, locals, and foreigners, regardless of age or nationality.
Hard Reef was the conception of Kazubo’s vision, however after 34 years of business and a celebrated history, our place has become dated. At this rate, it will be difficult to sustain and pass Kazubo’s creation to the next generation.
